Marking of products

The producer must see to that any electrical/electronic equipment put on the market after 13 August 2005 has been marked with the symbol shown in Appendix 4 indicating separate collection. In special cases, if necessary due to the size or operation of the product, the symbol can be marked on the package, instructions of use, or warranty certificate of the electrical/electronic equipment. (Government Decree on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, 10 § Markings on Electrical and Electronic Equipment)

The producer must see to that any electrical and electronic equipment put on the market after 13 August 2005 has been marked with an indication of the producer who put the equipment on the market in the European Community. The marking on the equipment must also indicate the fact that it has been put on the market after the entry into force of this Decree.

WEEE marking

The WEEE directive provides that any electrical and electronic equipment within the scope of application of the directive be marked with a symbol indicating separate collection (the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol) to inform the equipment user that the equipment indicated with the symbol prescribed by the directive are collected separately from other waste. In addition it is provided that on the marking of any electrical and electronic equipment put on the market after 13 August 2005 there must be an unequivocal indication of the producer of the equipment and information that the equipment has been manufactured or put on the market after the said date. These markings are necessary for the companies/organisations that process the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.

The electrical and electronic equipment within the scope of application of the WEEE directive must be marked with the producer's individual identification mark, and any equipment put on the market after 13 August 2005 must be marked with the date of either the manufacture or launch in the market of the product or with an additional mark used in connection with the symbol indicating separate collection (continuous bar under the pictorial symbol). The minimum length of the combination composed of a pictorial symbol indicating separate collection and a continuous bar is 7 mm. The symbol must be marked on equipment visibly, clearly and permanently.

The standard can be ordered from the Finnish Standards Association SFS (tel. 358 9 149 9331). The pictorial symbol shown in the standards can be ordered separately from SFS on a CD-ROM containing the symbol in various formats (ai, eps, tif and jpg).
